Place the remaining elements in order from least to most controllable.

Emotions

There is little we can do to control the emotions of others around us. The best way to deal with heightened emotion or stress is to recognize that there are external factors affecting the communication process and to try to not let this affect your own actionas and reactions.

Technology

Nowadays, everyone is connected. The best way to avoid distractions or interference from technology is to set the expectation for a "tech-free" meeting. If requested in advance, the communication process can successfully take place without email alerts and vibrating cell phones.

Time

Although sometimes we face the unexpected, time is the easiest factor to control. Try consistently setting youself a buffer for meetings, phone calls, or even time spent with friends. Doing less things, with more time and attention will only bring good things.

Noise

From construction outdoors to loud corridors or simply too many people trying to speak at one time, noise can get in the way of communication. Try to communicate in a closed, quiet space and always involve only the necessary parties.
