Sometimes, with the right attitude, a little bit of patience & a lot of listening, conflicts can be solved internally. Other times, it helps to have a neutral party present during conflict resolution. Read each of the boxes below to see how they might be applied.
1
With the Guidance of Another Family Member
If you can’t solve a conflict one-on-one with a family member, it can help to have a third person with a neutral perspective present. This person can encourage respectful interaction, keep emotions under control and help instigate conversation by asking questions and keeping both parties involved in the discussion.
2
Through the Support of a Family Advisor/Council
Sometimes, when there are multiple family members involved in a conflict or it is too hard to find a “neutral” party, it can help to turn to a family advisor/council. This person who knows the family well can help make objective decisions and encourage everyone to make smart decisions for the family and the business.
3
Using External Mediation
If neither of the two other solutions have worked, families can reach out to external mediation or advising services to help solve their conflict. Some of the time, seeking guidance from someone who has seen many similar situations can help shed light and options for extenuating circumstances.
