The NextGen Community

A generation rising to lead.

Within the family enterprise community, the next generation is rising, ready to become the leaders of positive change. Our vibrant group of rising leaders is committed to empowering one another with one clear mission in mind: to eliminate the “Shirtsleeves to Shirtsleeves” paradox in all generations of family business.

This bold vision is met with our NextGens’ insatiable willingness to share, learn and grow. As the rising generation of enterprising families, we are here to be informed by curated NextGen resources; to be inspired by business families who have led before us; to be guided by subject matter experts; and to make the most of our connections at NextGen events. Above all, we are here to make our voices heard and to elevate each other to reach the highest of our potentials together.

Being able to connect with future business owners from across Canada is just a tremendous opportunity.

The FEC NextGen community has provided me the networking, idea-sharing and thought-provoking dialogue I had been searching for as a Gen 2 in my family business. Sharing this amazing resource with like-minded family business professionals is a passion of mine.

Aaron Berman is the Vice President, Business Operations at BERMANFALK Hospitality Group. As an executive team member, he currently oversees all operational departments of the company both in Canada and abroad which includes: Project Management, Business Operations, Design, Manufacturing, Human Resources and IT. BERMANFALK Hospitality Group is a design-driven manufacturer of casegoods and seating for the 3-5 star hotel market across North America; a highly recognized brand in their field. He is a second-generation member of his family business, working alongside his father (Gary) and brother (Daniel) who also occupy executive roles in the company.

Aaron’s passion for thought-leadership and business innovation is what led him to become a national and regional (BC) ambassador for FEC, with a specific focus on building the NextGen community. He currently resides in Langley, British Columbia with his wife Jennifer and children, Brock and Elizabeth.

Family is my number one priority. Being part of the FEC NextGen group is a helpful outlet for discussing the ideas and challenges that arise when working with your loved ones. Having this support helps me maintain my priorities in the work/life balance.

Though Cheryl worked at her family business, Reggin Industries throughout the summers in high school, after her post-secondary education she decided to venture out and explore her passion of events and hospitality. For over five years, Cheryl held Catering and Events Manager roles at hotels within the Calgary, Alberta area. She used this time outside her family business to gain not only experience, but knowledge in what kinds of management styles and people skills work well for her.

Four years ago, fate stepped in. Cheryl was looking for a new job and Reggin Industries had a vacancy that fit with Cheryl’s skills which allowed her to return to the family busienss. Reggin Industries and the Alle Family are currently working on their first transition from the first to second generation of owners. Cheryl and two of her brothers are excited to take on the responsibility, legacy, and ability to be a positive impact within the community not only for the Alle family but for all the Reggin Industries’ employees and their own families..

As the NextGen family business leaders, we need to wear our family-ness as a badge of pride. When you look at the results family business brings to our community and economy, we have lots to be proud of.

Dean Koeller is President of Calvert Home Mortgage Investment Corporation, a family-owned business for more than 45 years. Calvert Home Mortgage has financing $750 million in mortgages on over 6,500 properties in Alberta and Ontario market.

The family was honored as a Signature Family in 2019 by the Alberta Business Family Institute, and a finalist for the Calgary Family Enterprise of the Year (FEYA) with Family Enterprise Canada in 2016. Dean was recognized with a Mortgage Investment Entity Industry Leadership Award by the Private Capital Market Association (PCMA) in 2017, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for community service in 2013, Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association President Award in 2012 and Top 40 under 40 in 2006 by Calgary Inc.
