The 2022 Ontario Region Family Enterprise of the Year Award Goes to DriverCheck Inc.

OAKVILLE, ON – December 1, 2022

The 2022 Ontario Region Family Enterprise of the Year Award (FEYA) winner has just been announced. Congratulations to this year’s recipient, DriverCheck Inc. of Ayr, Ontario and to the Page family.

The Regional Family Enterprise of the Year Awards are given annually by Family Enterprise Canada to recognize and celebrate the achievements of Canadian family businesses and the considerable contribution they make to both their local communities and our national economy.

“It’s always a pleasure discovering and honoring successful family businesses that serve as examples of how to integrate best practices that benefit the business, the family and their surrounding community. Congratulations DriverCheck and the Page family,” says Bill Brushett, President & CEO, Family Enterprise Canada.

DriverCheck (“DC”), Canada’s Fitness for Duty experts, and a leading provider of workplace medical testing and assessments, met all the criteria and more to win this year’s Ontario Region FEYA. DC was born out of Chris Page’s vision and passion for health and safety, which grew during his decades working as an emergency room and urgent care physician. In 1996, DriverCheck was founded to provide drug and alcohol testing to the trucking industry in response to new US regulations requiring Canadian trucking companies entering the United States to have a comprehensive drug and alcohol testing program. Since then, the company has experienced incredible success, growing from one employee to over 300, from one client to over 6,000, and from one drug test to millions of tests performed.

In the company’s early days, Chris drove across Ontario in his pickup truck educating trucking companies about the new US regulations and offering DriverCheck’s medical testing services with the goal of becoming the leader in the drug testing field; while his wife Mary-Jean, daughter Maggie and Dianne Holmes (DC’s first employee) created a testing program operating out of the barn beside the Page family home. Son Connor joined the family business a few years later as the company continued to grow.

In 2001, DC ventured out of the barn into a heritage building in rural Ayr, Ontario. They started with drug and alcohol testing for truckers, and soon after added other types of safety-sensitive testing. They then moved into testing for the oil and gas industry in Alberta, and later expanded into other industries, including mining, construction, rail, transit and airlines. Today, DC offers a full suite of occupational health services for a wide variety of industries all across Canada.

“DriverCheck is thrilled to be the recipient of this year’s Ontario Region Family Enterprise of the Year Award,” says Maggie Dunnett, President of DriverCheck Inc. “Our family has dedicated our lives to building a healthier and safer world by helping workplaces and workers across Canada stay healthy and safe, and by empowering our fabulous team to provide mind-blowing service to our clients. We thank Family Enterprise Canada for this incredible honour.”

The Page family has very strong family values which are reflected in every aspect of the company. They have created an acronym, F.A.M.I.L.Y, to show these values and how the company embodies them:

FUN: DC believes in taking time to have fun, even though they do serious work.

AUTHENTICITY: They are committed to treating everyone with respect, fairness and understanding. They will strive to earn the trust of their employees, their clients and their communities.

MOXIE: DC is built on sheer grit and determination. They have passion for what they do.

ICONIC SERVICE: People remain at the centre of all they do. They continually strive to provide mind-blowing service to their people, their clients and their workers.

LEARNING: They are committed to continuous learning and development, both personally and professionally.

YES-MINDEDNESS: They remain open, flexible and adaptable. They are committed to maintaining a solution-focused, positive outlook at all times.

About the Family Enterprise of the Year Award

The Family Enterprise of Year Award (FEYA) was established in 1986 to celebrate and promote the achievements of Canadian business families and the considerable contribution they make to the economic and social fabric of both their local communities and Canada as a whole. Each year, business families across Canada are nominated and recognized at regional FEYA celebrations. Each regional Recipient is then considered for the National Family Enterprise of the Year Award, chosen by a volunteer selection committee and presented at the National FEYA celebration.

FEYA is unique among business awards in Canada, as it does not only focus on traditional business metrics. Instead, the selection committee also looks at how well the family enterprise integrates best practices that benefit the business, the family and their communities. Having demonstrated significant capabilities in these regards, FEYA recipients are examples of excellence and are integral to Canada’s economic future.
